Project: Document Chris Forsberg’s weekend at Formula Drift Sonoma 2010 – where he finished fourth.

Role: Director, Co-Camera, Editor, Colorist.

Shot on the Canon 7D & Panasonic HMC-150. Converted to Sony XDCAM HD422 50mb/s codec. Edited in Final Cut Pro. Graded in Magic Bullet Looks.

Thanks to Day Light Savings time, I got an earlier start than usual on my Sunday and started working on a few edits. The following are screen grabs from a quick assembly – for Chris Forsberg’s year in review video for NOS Energy Drink. They’re all from FD Long Beach and represent an event – we didn’t get to cover for NOS/Chris this Formula Drift season – meaning that all of the footage for the year in review – will be fresh and unseen.

At Long Beach, I was testing out my Red Rock Micro – captain stubbing rig. Which allowed me to get closer and navigate quickly – without the bulk of the standard tripod. DSLR video is not the greatest handheld and when shot handheld it can be vomit inducing – there is no image stabilization.

Long Beach has a great backdrop, being the city’s downtown. The trade off being that the entire course is surrounded by fencing and barriers. Establishing the location and surroundings is important to my style of presentation – context and details.

Excited to log some more hours on this project and a few more – then share them with you.

Joshua “Hobo/Bearded Eyeball Films” Herron’s latest compilation of drifting moments set to non-mainstream music selections. Mr. Hobo Herron’s videos keep improving in style and quality with each release. I’m very excited to see what’s next when the Formula Drift series comes to the city of sin. Las Vegas and we get to shoot on Hobo’s home turf. So pumped. Nice work Josh. 

I finally made it out to a drift event at Turner field. This also means that I was chillin with the coolest kids in the ATL – the Drift Mechaniks. Rockin my Born To Run DM T-Shirt. As you can tell from the photo above, Andy Sapp has added Angel Eyes to his E46 BMW – which is an awesome look.

Got a ride along with Chris in an RB25 powered S13. Shot some bananas on car, under car, in car, and on front of car Flip camera footage. Plus let the guys try out the Letus 35 setup with Andy’s new XL-H1.

So strap in and prepare to go into over drift:

Its a good thing I picked up the extra long 45cm rails for the Letus adapter. Andy notices the difference in weight with the adapter.

Here is a quick edit I cut together for Formula Drift Atlanta 2009. Road Atlanta is one of my favorite places to shoot because of the red Georgia clay, the clouds, and the elevation change. Plus the event this year was crazy and the fan turn out was incredible.

This is one of the first videos, where I edited first with one song and then replaced it with another. The original edit was done with Metric’s “Help I’m Alive” and then I watched the rough- only to realize it was far too slow for what I was trying to do. Let me know what you think of the Cooker’s Kid Cudi remix and the video.

Long Beach Formula Drift, round one, was well over a month ago. Slacking on finishing edits. By this time I should have completed an edit for Formula Drift Atlanta Round 2.

To give a little insight into my editing process. I usually review all of my footage. Grab “selects” and string them together in a sequence. Prior to launching Final Cut Pro- I’ve usually selected several songs that I want to use. The nicest part of making my own edits- is the ability to use whatever music I desire. No worries about copyright, because I’m not selling anything or producing the video for money.

The song I picked for this edit is special. I first heard this remix at the Sundance Film Festival 2009. My old roommate Brian Steele had played Tokyo Police Club for me a while back. Then Dave Drusky, the coolest person I know from Portland, introduced me to the remix by RAC- while at Sundance. It fit my life at the time incredibly well. Lyrically and compositionally.

Its difficult to use songs that you particularly care for in an edit- because it inevitably means that you must listen to them repeatedly. Which can kill the freshness and one’s desire for future listening.

Here is my edit for D1GP Anaheim for StreetFire.net – Let me know what you think. 

D1GP makes its return to the United States with its first event at Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, California. Check out this fine Nissan Silvia S15 build by Garage BOSO and driven by Ross Petty. Frank and Ross run Garage BOSO and are fun dudes. They painted this box truck they picked up in metallic black and added the garage BOSO logo. Nice. The rasta colored S15 is really impressive. Making over 450+ HP at the wheels from a stroked 2.4 liter SR20DET. GNARLY.

D1GP set up in the Angel’s parking lot. Course featured a 3rd or 4th (depending on the car and driver) right hand initiation, into a left horse-shoe, followed by a quick chicane. Plus a couple of parking lot dips and few small K-Rails (Luckily no one really pushed them too much)

I still love Formula D.

Pat is now piloting a twin turbo Nissan 350z. Listen to the turbos spool up in the launch. With the fisheye lens you can see Angels stadium fly by in the background and the gigantic “A” sign that sits out front of the stadium.

Shot with a Century Optics Fisheye lens, Canon HF20, and a suction mount to the inside of the windshield. Gotta work on some of the vibrations.

April 10th & 11th, 2009 was the first round of the 2009 Formula Drift Season at Long Beach. The Long Beach track is a portion of the setup used by the Long Beach Grand Prix which is held the weekend after Formula D. This year, shooting for StreetFire.net instead of Riceboytv- Ricky Chu, Ricardo Glock, Joshua Herron, and I set out to shoot the event. Here are some images from my Panasonic LX2 from the new StreetFire office in downtown LA, Korean BBQ Tacos courtesy of Scion (thanks Fred), some dupa fresh clouds, and of course drifting from LBC.

Video Of the Week, Joshua Herron‘s Media Day edit. 

Josh works the eazy dolly and gets some awesome dolly shots along the fence at the Long Beach course for Formula Drift Media Day.

Super smooth dollies with foreground fence movement- combined with drifting looks phenomenal. 

Rhys Millen and the RMR crew putting the trunk lid and wing on the Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe. DC Chavez asked me to shoot with him at Rhys Millen’s test out at El Toro air field. The infamous strip that has been home to Samuel Hubinette’s BF Goodrich hangar drift advertisement and Ken Block’s Gymkhana Practice video. El Toro is also a sweet spot to do some testing and tuning- with miles of runway to play on.

Joshua Herron and I joined up with DC Chavez to shoot the practice for Hyundai. Josh brought along his new EZ-Dolly and we go to compare the Panasonic HVX side by side with the Sony EX-1. Something I’ve always wanted to compare on a shoot.

The blue and silver paint with the gold Enkei RPF1′s are great looking.

The Panasonic HVX and EZ Dolly lined up for some interior hangar beauty shots. Really impressed with the EZ Dolly so far. 

The LCD on the HVX is not as sharp as the EX-1′s. It’s also standard 4×3 shaped. While the EX-1 only shoots in 16×9 aspect ratio.

Parting shot. The red roof beams inside the hangar looked stellar in contrast to the greenish tinted floor. 

Thanks to DC Chavez, Joshua Herron, and Rhys Millen for making the day fun and exciting. I can’t wait to see how they end up using our footage and to make an edit out of the footage I have from the testing. Stay posted.

A little while back, I posted about getting to watch Chris Forsberg drag race his drift built 350z at Fontana drag strip. Joey Redmond, of Wrecked Magazine, invited me to go with him and check out the occasion. Which is a great reminder that purpose built cars can be multi-purpose and by adjusting a few things- the power can be utilized in a different form. So a car that can freely break traction in high gear can also power down, launch hard, and record a fast ET in a drag race.
