Recently, Skylar Smith and I set out to test my RED Epic’s 300fps capabilities. How did we test them? By having Skylar throw water balloons, tomatoes, and spray diet coke and mentos at my face – all while letting the EPIC capture the action at 300 frames per second and a shutter of 1/2500th of a second. Enough to capture some of the quickest of reactions, movements, and water droplets. Enjoy and expect more high speed action in our future projects.

2010 has come to an end, here is a look back my life & memories from the year two thousand and ten.

January.

Started the year off in Dubai. Shooting the Dubai 24hour race for Speedhunters and covering Team Need for Speed – in it’s first outing. Dubai is a collision of culture and progress. The architecture is like a post modern and modern designer’s wildest dreams.

Sundance Film Festival 2010, was my third year in a row at the festival. Working with a team of talented producers, shooters, and editors to create the official live @ sudance content. I got the chance to shoot interviews with Bill Gates and Sundance founder – Robert Redford.

Then of course, get knee deep in some fresh pow pow for a few days of snowboarding in Utah – post festival.

February.

After months of planning, purchased a 1974 VW Westfalia van. Westy, as the van became known, would be the transportation and symbol for Keep Drifting Fun – my grassroots drifting documentary. Co-director, Joshua Herron, made the trip to LA a few times to help me complete body work on the van.

Turned 26. Everything after 25 seems down hill and less reason to celebrate. However, I knew that 2010 would be a big year for me and I was excited regardless.

March.

The ID Agency and Formula Drift asked me to put together a 2009 Re-cap video for the 2010 season kick off gallery. I was able to show my work along side friends: Linhbergh and Jose J. Martinez in a Long Beach art gallery prior to the first round of the 2010 FD season. Rad.

April.

Six days out riding so far this 2010-2011 season, which is close to the amount of days I rode for all of 2009-2010. I was told once that you need to ride the number of days you are years old. Personally, I think that is a good guideline and means I have some more riding to do! At least I’m on pace for the month of December!

Get acquainted, here on my blog, I will continue to share bits of content and entertainment that I enjoy and are relevant to my life and interests. Having finished Malcolm Gladwell’s Tipping Point last month – here is a great short form documentary on trends and the essence of influence. It is incredibly well made. Well shot interviews, slick motion graphics, and interesting facts. The filmmakers did their research. They even reference Gladwell and have a mograph that shows the chain of influence from hip hop artists – Notorious BIG to Kid Cudi and Drake. DAMN.

INFLUENCES is my Video Of the Week selection. Take a 15 minute break from your busy busy busy life and watch it. Things don’t just come from a vacuum – they come from influencers.

Excited to hear Chris Forsberg’s new Nissan CORR truck motor in his NOS Energy Drink 350z.

There are some serious concrete parks here in Vancouver. Unfortunately, my skateboard setup is somewhere in Minnesota – with the Westy van. So in the meantime, I picked up this Kitsch board.

So clean, that changed the same day when I rode the park down the street and scuffed it up proper. A lot of my friends collect skateboard decks. Which are like modern day prints of artwork. Never understood it. Maybe after you’ve ridden them, I can’t look at a skateboard without wanting to ride it.

China Bones bearings are the jam. Reds are better than most cheapo ABEC 5 or 3 rated bearings out there. These Momentum wheels were a bit softer than my last set of wheels, but I wanted some more grip like I have on my sector 9 longboards – so I opted for a lower durometer wheel. Pivot turns should grip not slip for my style.

Rounded out with Enjoi hardware – with some bright colors to indicate the nose truck.

Skate or Die.

Royksopp recorded two albums when they went into the studio to make Junior – the second half which comes out in September is Senior. Junior/Senior, nice. The senior sound, is a more mature and less vocal based than Junior – which had some of the most “pop” friendly tracks to date. Ever since my friend David introduced me to them in 2007 – I’ve been hooked. Catch a sample of the new album along with some senior characters in the video above.

Geezer for a day. I still need to shoot that short film idea. Until the album is released, take a listen to Junior. My favorite track is The Girl and the Robot.

Strokes front man, Julian Casablancas ’11th Dimension’. On the tardy train with this album. As a Strokes fan, should have heard about Julian’s solo project a while ago.

Throw out your Hero camera and pick up a ContourHD. Unlike the GoPro the ContourHD cameras actually work.

The ContourHD cameras are simple to setup, easy to operate, and the image quality is superb.

For the shots from Andy Sapp’s car, we utilized the windshield mount kit with the first camera, and the universal mount adapter with a Manfrotto magic arm attached to the roll cage with a Manfrotto super clamp with the second camera. The windshield mount kit suction cup was mounted to the upper windshield and pointed forward at the hood. While the super clamp was attached to the passenger side impact roll cage – then the magic arm attached to the clamp – pointed out the window extending about a foot outside of the passenger side window. Then the universal mount equipped Contour Camera was attached to a camera platform on the end of the arm. The distance outside of the car is what gives the side angle shot of Andy driving such a cool feel. It’s a view that is out of the ordinary and in a location where few cameras have been mounted before (none that I can think of – that’s why I put it there…)

Andy did a nice job syncing and mixing the audio from the two cameras. The split screen works well. So press play and ride along.

This song has been stuck in my head all day. I had to look up the lyrics because at one point I thought he was talking about midgets, magic, and mind blowing. Turns out, the lyrics are incredibly well done – Yacht Rock.

While JOB’ing it up at the Chateau Elan I smashed my head into the ceiling – FAIL.

Linhbergh got this snap mid-fall on the return. The beds were too soft and the ceiling was too low.

Gotta pay the cost, to be the boss. Or some other cheezy idiom for the occasional cost of being rad and doing goofy stuff.

This video takes you through the process of designing, cutting, sewing, printing a transparency, burning a screen, washing out, lining up a planten, and screening a multi-color t-shirt print. Inspiring and very well done. In all regards.

Now I just need to get my own press and start printing some of my own gear.

Free Gold Watch

On news stands now is the May 2010 issue of Import Tuner. The Longshots section on the last page is dedicated to reader submitted photographs. May’s issue features stills from Andy Sapp and I’s videos. Plus an interview with each of us. It also has an STI vs EVO battle, which features Elliot’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.

Also interviewed is Miki Taka who I had the pleasure of working with at the Dubai 24H. Way to go Miki. Great interview and some hot photos.

Forza 3 x Puma sneakers showed up on my doorstep thanks to the ID Agency and Microsoft. Thanks guys! I like the hybrid Puma low profile mixed with a rounded heel driving shoe. Can’t wait to heel toe in them. The dance move and the brake/clutch combo.

On the last day of the decade, December 31, 2009 – I’ve put together this highlight post of my 2009. The year has been great for me, I started my own production company, had several firsts (NASCAR race, Bonneville Speedweek, Pikes Peak, and FIA GT), and crisscrossed the United States on road trips no less than three times. I also got to visit friends and meet up with friends in new areas of the country. Snowboard more than previous years and get recognition for my work. Thank you to everyone for your support and friendship in 2009. Cannot wait to go bigger in 2010. Happy new years.

Flew to Chicago to visit with the MWS, Mid-West Surf crew and snowboard in Michigan.

Sundance Film Festival. Worked on the Live @ Sundance crew for my second year in a row. Then got to play in some Utah pow pow afterwards.

February

Colorado trip. A Thousand Miles of Colorado. Drove all over the state.

Started at Streetfire.net – started with this video and ended up producing over 50 more videos for them during my time there.

March

Visited Texas for the Texas Mile event.

BFGoodrich Nation of Go Tour starts in San Francisco, California. On the road for 23+ days – working out of a van. With some amazing guys who would become great friends.

Road trip – Richmond, VA to Los Angeles, CA – Buffalo, NY and Cleveland, OH thrown in the mix to visit friends and family. All in a 2010 Mitsubishi Ralliart Sportback.
