Rhys Millen’s Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets the once over before the first day of testing at Pike’s Peak. Rhys first competed and won his class at the age of 19 at Pike’s Peak. Now a veteran of the hill climb, he’s going to pilot the new Hyundai Genesis platform up the hill in the RWD Time Attack Class and try to break his own record- previously set with his Pontiac Solstice. The most impressive element of the hill climb setup is that there are very few changes between Rhy’s drift setup for the Genesis and the hill climb setup- same suspension components and same tires. Consider this, one week before the Hill Climb competition- this car will be sliding sideways at 80+ miles an hour on the Las Vegas Formula D asphalt track- then driven hard up hill on pavement, gravel, and dirt- through switchbacks, past trees, cliffs, around massive cambered sweepers and to the snow covered summit of Pike’s Peak.
Fortunately for me, Rhys invited me to come document the Hill Climb this year. Here is day one on the hill- location scouting and getting adjusted to the elevation change.

Looming in the background under a sky of clouds is Pike’s Peak.

The local Hyundai dealership served as the main base for the setup and prepping of the car.
