2009 Reading List

After flying back from Miami and reading Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar I decided to order a few books that have had my attention for a while.

I present my prospective 2009 reading list:

  • Snuff, by Chuck Palahniuk
  • Salmonella Men on Planet Porno: Stories, by Yasutaka Tsutsui
  • Less Than Zero, by Bret Easton Ellis
  • Glamorama, by Bret Easton Ellis
  • A Man Without a Country, by Kurt Vonnegut
  • God Bless you, Mr.Rosewater, by Kurt Vonnegut
  • Underworld, by Don DeLillo

Snuff, is Chuck Palahniuk’s latest work. To date, its the only Palahnuk novel I haven’t read. His writing style is unmatched and he has yet to disappoint. The Tsutsui book comes from several recommendations and it being featured on some solid “best of” lists. This will be my first book by Yasutaka and from the reviews I’ve read- I’m sure to appreciate his dark humor and satire. Less than Zero ends up on the list because I found that his film adaptations are great, but not as great as his novels. Ellis’ American Psycho is one of my favorite works of fiction and Less than Zero is a very solid film and I’m looking forward to the novel. Ditto with Glamorama, minus the fact that its not a feature film. The preliminary reading list is rounded out by Vonnegut and DeLillo. Vonnegut falls into a similar category with Palahniuk. They are two authors, who I have read almost all of the available novels they have published. I’ve leafed through A Man Without a Country in a bookstore before- finding comfort in its sketches and its clever essays. God Bless You, Mr.Rosewater, features Kilgore Trout a re-occurring character is many of Vonnegut’s novels. Underworld, published in 1997 is one of DeLillo’s more current works. This past year, I throughly enjoyed reading DeLillo’s Americana and am excited to read more by the author.
