RED EPIC & SCARLET – Game Changers

After months of speculation, the specs for the RED Epic and Scarlet Still and Motion cameras have been announced. They are going to be game changers for digital filmmaking. While filmmakers have been ogling over the possibility of Canon or Nikon upgrading the firmware of the D90 and 5D Mark II – RED has been developing some serious sensors and a camera system that is going to change the market.

With Sensors ranging from 3k all the way to the massive panoramic 28k sensor. The RED Epic & Scarlet cameras utilize variable frame rates and can record onto compact flash cards just like the RED One.

I’m most excited about having a camera that can do 120fps with affordable Canon or Nikon optics mounted in front of a 3k sensor. Plus the ability to record in RED’s REDCODE Raw format will allow for similar tweaking of video that one gets from a RAW still image. The ability to adjust white balance, gamma, and exposure data in post.

I’m excited. Thanks to Stu Maschwitz for being quick to post the announcement.

Dax - Which are you looking at? And if I'm understanding this correctly you go 2/3 mysterium x or you go Epic? Will need your expertise let's hear it.

Will - I like the 3k Scarlet with the Mini Red Mount- not the fixed lens variation. 3k is a ton of visual information. Considering that many theaters use 2k projection- 3k seems like plenty. For me having the ability to shoot at 120fps is a huge selling factor. For most of my recent work, having a camera that can record at a high frame rate is huge for slow motion shots. Epic is still outside of my level financially. It will be interesting to see the price point on the mini red prime lenses, compact flash recorder, viewfinder, and other accessories necessary to shoot with the Red Scarlet and Epic "Brains".

Kurt Wojda - 3K is absolutely more visual information than you'd ever need. Isn't it something along the lines of 80% of all films still be scanned in for color work at 2K? I mean really at the indie level, I'd be more than happy to have 1080p in my hands shooting through real glass and outputting to Redcode. That said, the $7,000 setup seems like the ideal product in my mind. Yeah it's quite a bit more expensive than the step down, but I don't think you can underestimate the benefits of having a full frame sensor...plus you can get some killer old manual focus Nikon glass for next to nothing nowadays.

Dax - The mini red prime lenses, compact flash recorder, viewfinder, and other accessories necessary to shoot with the Red Scarlet and Epic “Brains” will be pricey.. can't imagine anything else. Good point on the cheap mf Nikon glass.
