Town, South Africa |

thru 1.28.2007
The
woman at customs smiled. All of the Capetonians smiled.
It could have been my long sleeves, pants, winter pale
skin, or bulky SLR camera hanging from my neck. Whatever
it was, I wanted to shed it.
The weather in Cape Town was warm, a departure from the
winter temperatures in the northern hemispehere. The city
becomes a winter get-a-way for affluent Europeans. Food,
shopping, and recreation are cheap by the inflated Euro
and Dollar standards. South Africans are more than willing
to help you spend your Rand- the South African currency. |
Sparkling or Still? |
| The first time, of many, that I was asked
this question left me dumbfounded. Sparkling or still?
What does that have to do with bottled water? Sparkling
water has never quenched my thirst. Bring on the still. |
Respect |
| During the trip, I heard many suggestions as to what American city Cape Town resembled. New Orleans, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, even Miami. Cape Town is unlike anything in the United States. If anything it combines the better elements of many American cities; the brightness of the western sun, the colors of the Atlantic coast, and the relaxed temperament of the south, but in Africa. |
A day in the Sky |
| While airborne for 22+ hours (Los Angeles > London > Cape Town), remember to: sample both the red and the white wines, traditional and vegetarian in-flight meal offerings, and indulge in-flight foreign television. Presently the BBC is cranking out better comedy than the states. One of our top comedies, The Office, is a BBC re-make for American audiences. Shows like Peep Show, That Mitchell and Webb Look, and The Mighty Boosh are brilliant. The writing is intelligent, extremely creative, and generally disregards convention- what an idea. |
